What Tax Deductions Can You Rightfully Take?

By Darrin Mish of Law Offices of Darrin T. Mish, P.A.

What Tax Deductions Can You Rightfully Take?

For some, especially non-experts on taxation, tax time can be daunting. Which deduction should we make use of, the standard or the itemized deduction? If you itemize, what can you claim? This write-up is a short discussion of what tax deductions are, what are the common types to avail of, how to know if you qualify and how to benefit from them. For more detailed IRS assistance, it is best to consult an accountant.

Tax deductions are helpful in reducing your total taxable income as they are expenses taken from your gross income. Tax deductions are incurred by a taxpayer from a variety of reasons and purposes.

The two types of deductions are standardized and itemized deduction. Standard deductions, which are based on a person's civil status: single, married, head of household, are fixed amounts subtracted from the gross income. This article will, on the other hand, emphasize on itemized deduction, which is a corresponding amount for certain pre-determined expenses. When in doubt as to which type of deduction you are entitled to, IRS and private assistance are readily available.

Expenses like having children, adopting children, paying college tuition, earned income tax credit and energy efficiency entitles you to a tax credit. Tax credits are deducted from the total taxable income and not from the gross income. To determine if you are qualified to claim for certain tax credits, kindly refer to the instructions in the tax forms and the IRS site.

Presented below are some of the common tax deductions:

* Professional and business-related association fees
* Costs of job-hunting
* Fees for job agencies
* Professional books and magazines
* Union dues
* Business attire and uniforms
* Home and office expenses
* Legal fees to collect taxable income, such as alimony
* Tax preparation and advice charges
* Costs Incurred from moving to a new job
* Fees for IRS set-up and administration
* Other legal fees
* Charitable donations
* Business liability costs and insurance premiums
* Tuition fees for classes taken to perform better in your job

When calculating for your taxes, always seek IRS assistance so you do not overpay. The IRS booklet, online information and the online tax preparation service, however, are useful references for itemization if you opt to do this by yourself.

Many options are available in knowing if you qualify for these deductions. The instruction booklet is one of these methods. In addition, the online tax preparation service guides you as you go through the process. Obviously, a professional tax preparer would prove to be of utmost assistance in your claims.

Tax deductions are lawful ways of reducing the amount you pay for taxes or increasing the amount of the refund you will obtain. To make sure you are claiming all the deductions to which you are entitled to - or not mistakenly claiming for deductions- IRS assistance or professional help is always helpful. Otherwise, make time to carefully go over the guidelines in your booklet. In reality, many have overpaid, so be mindful of the deductions that you are eligible for.
