The Various Ways that the IRS Receives Tax Returns

By Darrin Mish of Law Offices of Darrin Mish

People tend to file their taxes in the same manner that they've always filed them as tax season rolls on. This is a good thing as basically, they are complying with their tax obligations. It is common knowledge that a large chunk of the population has difficulty with this yearly task. What many people don't realize is that there are actually several different methods that the IRS receives tax returns from residents of the country. Each method has its own pros and cons but the final result is that you'll have filed your taxes. Of course, given a specific circumstance, one tax return preparation method will prove to be better than another.

Think about a business owner who, instead of referring to a tax accountant, would rather compute and file taxes by himself/herself. This is perfectly fine but some situations would necessitate the experience of a tax professional who can offer advice in avoiding legal troubles and provide tips in taking advantage of as many tax deductions as possible.

The use of a tax preparation software is one of the widely-known methods in filing tax returns. The tax return industry was in a way revolutionized by this method. However, this, too, is not always the best solution for certain people depending on the characteristics of their specific situation, and depending on any IRS problems that have experienced in the past. Other methods include e-filing, online tax preparation, free filing through the IRS, traditional pen and paper forms, and hiring a tax accountant.

Every year, the IRS gets enormous numbers of tax returns from the various filing procedures that it has made available to all people. How do you decide which one is right for you? It actually depends on your specific case. Everyone must certainly take the time to truly assess their needs and abilities.

Many individuals are better off not using the traditional paper forms when filing their taxes. This is especially relevant to individuals who made a number of charitable contributions, have spent money on office supplies, travel a lot, and earn money from mutual funds, stocks and bonds. In all these situations, there are complex financial data that need to be reflected in the IRS tax forms. It must then be ascertained that before filing out their returns, they must make use of all the deductions that they can avail of to reduce their taxable income. In the long run, this will lead to larger refunds and avoidance of IRS problems.

The IRS, in general, has no major preference on the method you use in filing for your tax returns. As long as it is appropriate for your particular situation and everything is in order, the IRS will gladly accept your tax return.

For more complicated tax returns, it is always highly advisable to hire a professional tax preparer like an accountant or even a tax attorney in more serious cases. Their experience and education will make them handle complex issues and situations, and ultimately, help you solve problems with the IRS.
